Artifact #5: The Death Train by Irene Awret


While in Mechelen, Awret used paint and pencil to capture life in the camp as well as the faces of other inmates, many of whom were later deported to Auschwitz by the SS. She painted The Death Train in 1944 - the piece uses color and form to capture the dread and anguish of witnessing the transports come and go from Mechelen, all bound for extermination camps.
