Artifact #8: Book of fantasy recipes

Book of fantasy recipes of inmates in Ravensbruck

(From the Yad Vashem artifact collection on life in Nazi camps.)

Meeting in groups could be a dangerous activity in the camps; any behavior that seemed to imply secrecy or clandestine activity could be grounds for punishment, torture, or death at the hands of the SS.  Nonetheless, a group of inmates at Ravensbruck, a concentration camp for women in northern Germany, met each week to write down and share their fantasy recipes.  The book represents an attempt by the women to remember their lives and traditions before internment, to recall the pleasure of cooking, and it perhaps even symbolizes the hopes of a future outside of camp walls.
